The COO that hired me was let go in September 2012. They didn't know what to do with me and decided to lay me off in March 2013, citing as stated, the high salary and lakc of direction for my position. They created the position for me in 01/2012 and never really developed the position. I had no performance issues whatsoever yet now I am out of work due to their lack of planning and/or efforts to provide work for me once they terminated my direct superior.
As long as salary (i.e., financial reasons) is the true reason, then the discharge is probably legal. If, however, that is merely pretext for some other reason that is illegal, for example based on a protected characteristic such as age, race. religion, ethnicity, etc.), then it may not be a legal discharge.
