QUESTION

When do I get my settlement money?

Asked on Oct 29th, 2013 on Insurance - Minnesota
More details to this question:
I am currently 17 and I received a good chunk of money when i was 5 and a half due to a nasty dog bite. It was put into a trust fund. My parents are saying I dont get it until Im 19 but to me it doesn't make sense that I would need to wait until I'm 19 because I will be in collage when I'm 18 and i need it to pay for that. I know they won't spend it but is there anyway i could get the settlement money when I turn 18. Or are my parents just lying to me and will hid the check until Im 19 because they think i can't manage my own money.

I am not sure what the specific laws are in your state, but in Mississippi (where I am) you would not get the money until you are 21.   You need to check your local laws and see what they say, along with whatever the paperwork regarding the settlement you received when you were younger says.   Regardless, however, you can petition the Court to receive some of the money before it is all due to you.  Usually a Judge will allow disbursement of some money for some important things, like to pay for college or school books, etc.   To be sure, you should contact the attorney who is managing your trust.   Best of luck.
