More details to this question:
My sister did not appoint an administrator of estate; she dies last December. I filed paperwork for life insurance policy. I got the checks- but they are made out to the "estate of..." Do I have to open an estate account to cash these checks. They total only $3,000. I live in Illinois, so did my sister.

You will not be able to cash the checks without an estate opened.  You may also need a court order to open the account in order to make sure there are not any other potential survivors that could be beneficiaries.
