QUESTION

How do I respond to a letter of collection not in my name

Asked on Jul 21st, 2021 on Insurance - Florida
More details to this question:
October 2020, I was in a car accident. I am the vehicle owner and driver. Received citation. My insurance lapsed, without my knowledge a week prior. I received a letter from the driver I tapped (his bumper, he hit the car in front of him. Causing damage. However The Driver listed on the letter is not myself. But the elderly disabled man I care for, who I listed as co_signer of my vehicle. He bought the vehicle for me. I don't understand Why he is being sued, he was not in the vehicle at the time nor that day. What do I do now?

Unfortunately, under Florida law, owner's of vehicles are responsible for damage caused by their vehicle even if they weren't in them at the time, so long as the driver had the owner' permission to drive it. Make sure to respond to the complaint within 20 days of service.
