QUESTION

Do I need to have insurance from 2 states on 1 vehicle if I am in the process of moving??

Asked on Apr 11th, 2018 on Insurance - Florida
More details to this question:
I am in the process of moving from MA to FL and my insurance company insists that I must carry car insurance on my vehicle for both states; the car is still registered in MA and I am waiting for the title to be sent to the DMV in FL so I know I must continue to pay for MA insurance but my insurance company says I must pay for FL insurance as well because I am driving the car in the state !!. I have never heard of having to pay both states for one car. Is this legal and normal procedure?

Whether your coverage will apply, and in which state, and when, depends on the language of the policy, which I can't read. So you will either need to trust your insurance company about what the policy says, or get a copy and read it yourself.   Most policies are complicated.  They are also different from each other (vastly).  So we can't tell you some general rule.  It depends on what your policy says. I will tell you that I have handled cases where there was a huge fight about whether coverage still applied because of a move from one state, to another, with a transfer of insurance.  So I would not mess around with this.   If you want to be safe, your best bet is to buy the coverage for the new state as soon as you possibly can.  Until then, you are in the danger zone and possibly may not have coverage if/when you need it. Best of luck to you. Tina Willis Law - Personal Injury, Car & Truck Accident & Medical Malpractice Lawyer 390 N.
