QUESTION

What are my visitation rights as the grand mother?

Asked on May 24th, 2014 on Child Custody - Illinois
More details to this question:
My son had a child out of wedlock. The mother let us see her a few times for around 1 hour each time but now is engaged and won't answer any of my messages. My grandchild has been in the hospital and I think just in a wreck without letting any of us know. The child does not have our last name and my son wasn't allowed to be on birth certificate. My son is unemployed so therefore can't pay child support. The baby is 9 months old now. Is there anything I, as the grandmother, can do to see my grand baby and if so what will it cost?

You have minimal rights, mostly derivative of the father. Even if dad is unemployed, a court would give him visitation unless that relationship would not be in the child's best interest. You could then see the child when dad has him. Otherwise your burden in obtaining grandparent's visitation is extremely high.
