More details to this question:
My soon to be ex husband is a former judge in my area. Because of this, I have not been able to obtain local representation and hiring someone out of town is cost prohibitive. I am navigating this process on my own. We have been separated the requisite amount of time and a divorce was filed by him. There were some issues that had to be settled, but those are done and the lawsuit that was filed has been dropped. The question I have now is, what is next? He refuses to speak to me and the case is just sitting. I don’t know what else, if anything, I need to do. Once before, I called the courthouse and had the case calendared to address my lawsuit. My husband did not show and the sitting judge said they couldn’t hear the case because of his relationship with my husband. I’m afraid to try and calendar the case again just to have a repeat circumstance. Any help is appreciated. What do I do now?
If you are not able to find an attorney who is local and can't afford an out of town attorney, the only other options that I can think of is to represent yourself or see if you are able to find an attorney who is willing to represent you for free. We do offer advice and assistance at our regular hourly rate without making a general appearance in your case. You may even hire us to draft documents for you to file in court. That should be much less expensive than hiring an attorney to handle the case for you. If you are interested in an initial consultation to discuss this matter, please call us at 919-680-2300.
