QUESTION

Should I hire a lawyer if I was stopped by cops to question me about my landlord's son?

More details to this question:
I was stopped and questioned last night a block from my home by the police. I gave my name and address and what I was doing walking down town at 12 midnight. I got nervous about the questioning, because I had no idea why he was questioning me so I refused to answer any more questions unless I had a lawyer. I tried to leave and he would not allow me to leave so I ask if I was under arrest and he said no. He then asked why I would not answer his questions and I told him that I have no idea what is going on and for all I know that a name that came up in there questioning was dead and this is a murder investigation. At that point he asks me if I killed the person, I answered no. They get on the phone, called up the person and did a welfare check and tell her on the phone that I was threatening her and they wanted to make sure she was all right. The officer then proceeded to try to use this as leverage to get me to talk to him. I refused to talk unless I had a lawyer and tried to leave again. He would not let me leave the scene. He then asks me what I have in my pockets and asked me to take it out. I decide it is best for my own safety because the officer was getting twitchy to have him search me. At this point he allows me to leave. From his questioning I know that they were interested in my landlordโ€™s son because the officer knew his name without it coming from me. The person that was called last night was my land lord. My land lord lives on the property that I live on. The guy is a shady character. I have never seen him involved in illegal activities but it would not surprise me if he was. Within the last 3-4 months the police have been out to my residence 3-4 times because of my landlordโ€™s son. They have arrested at least one person. They have claimed that my landlordโ€™s sonโ€™s girl friend had made a statement about her son having killed my landlord. I am pretty sure that the only reason I was stopped was because of this.

Get a lawyer. They are going beyond any bounds that are proper.

You do not need a lawyer. Since you were not under arrest, you should have been allowed to leave the scene.
