You cannot use a false name or alias to enter a contract. You can only use your legal name.

It depends upon the reason, but in most cases it would be deemed a fraudulent misrepresentation and subject the contract to be voided at the discretion of the landlord.

If there is no intent to defraud and the landlord is not out money then it is probably not illegal.

This could be fraud. Obtaining a good or service using a false name. You should speak to an attorney. In my experience, the district attorney has found a real person with the name you used and also charged identity theft.
