Cell phone users are protected from "robo-calls" by the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which makes it illegal to place unsolicited telemarketing calls to a cellular phone. The Act gives individuals the right to sue under certain circumstances. When those circumstances are met, the consumer can recover up to $500 in damages for each call. When the violation is intentional, as in when a telemarketer has been asked to stop calling, the court can triple the damages as a penalty. So hypothetically, if this telemarketer had called your number 20 times in the last year, knowing that you did not want such calls, you might recover damages as much as $30,000.
